Liza Adams MSc, DO is an accomplished osteopath with over 30 years of clinical experience. A graduate of The British School of Osteopathy, she is the principal practitioner at Twist & Shout Osteopathic Health Centre and has worked in both private practice and the NHS, including the Acute Back Pain Service at Weymouth and Bridport Hospitals. Early in her career, Liza specialised in the treatment of acute sporting injuries and worked extensively with American Football teams, both in clinical practice and pitch-side support. Her professional background includes participation in the STOP! Back Pain research project funded by The Health Foundation and volunteer work with Freedom from Torture, treating survivors of trauma. Liza holds an MSc in Experimental Methods in Psychology from University College London and has served as External Examiner for the General Osteopathic Council and Visitor for the Quality Assurance Agency. Liza’s integrative approach combines structural, cranial, classical, and visceral techniques, and her practice is recognized by major medical insurers such as BUPA, AXA PPP, and WPA.
Charlotte graduated from Swansea University in 2015 with a Master’s degree in Osteopathy (M.Ost). During her training she developed a strong interest in movement, rehabilitation, and functional training, which continues to inform her whole-body, integrated approach to treatment. Since qualifying, Charlotte has completed further professional development in cranial osteopathy and taping techniques. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings and currently divides her time between clinics in Bridport and Yeovil. Alongside her work with people, she also provides osteopathic treatment for animals. In 2020, Charlotte completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Animal Osteopathy (PgCert.AO) with the Osteopathic Centre for Animals. She is particularly focused on helping patients return to the activities they enjoy, combining effective short-term pain relief with long-term, sustainable outcomes.
Heidi qualified in 2001 from the College of Integrated Chinese medicine in Reading with a Lic Ac (Licentiate of Acupuncture). Heidi is a member of the British Acupuncture council, the largest regulatory body for the practioners of traditional Acupuncture. The BAcC maintains high standards of education, ethics and is bound by a strict professional codes, conducts and safe practice. Heidi runs a clinic in Bridport on a Tuesdays and Fridays, using a combined style of 5 element and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).

Rather than treating conditions, osteopaths address the individual, considering how the body’s structure affects its function. Many people seek help for muscle and joint pain or sports injuries. Treatment focuses on the skeleton, joints, muscles, soft tissues, and internal organs. While not a cure-all, osteopathy aims to support the body’s natural health, benefiting people of all ages. In the UK, osteopaths often work alongside other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care.
Patients are assessed through a detailed case history that covers current concerns and past medical conditions. This is followed by an examination of the musculoskeletal system, with neurological and vascular assessments when appropriate. Using palpation — a highly developed sense of touch — and pattern recognition, osteopaths identify areas of dysfunction that may contribute to pain. When needed, patients can be referred for further investigations such as X-rays or MRI scans, often in cooperation with a GP or specialist. At this practice, we maintain a flexible, patient-centred approach. Patients are encouraged to call within a few days of treatment between 9–10 a.m. to update us on their progress and discuss next steps. Using gentle stretching and joint manipulation techniques, osteopaths help create the optimal conditions for the body’s natural healing.
UK-trained osteopaths undertake a minimum of four years of study. During the BSc degree, they learn to assess patients with pain that may arise from the musculoskeletal system. Differential diagnosis is an essential skill, as pain can often be referred from other areas of the body. Students study anatomy, physiology, embryology, pathology, and clinical methods, along with medical subjects such as orthopaedics, rheumatology, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, genitourinary and gastrointestinal health, neurology, and psychology. This comprehensive education enables practitioners to master both the philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine. All osteopathic colleges are overseen and accredited by the Quality Assurance Agency.
When visiting an osteopath for the first time, a full history and examination are carried out to assess all relevant systems. Osteopathy takes a “global” approach, considering a patient’s physical, chemical, and emotional wellbeing. Pain is often linked to past trauma or other health issues. For instance, shoulder pain may stem from muscles, joints, nerves in the neck, or even organ dysfunction such as heart, lung, or diaphragm problems. Similarly, neck pain can relate to cardiovascular issues, and back pain may result from kidney or pelvic conditions. Still, most cases of back pain are classified as “simple mechanical pain.”
